In celebration of our 60th anniversary, we will feature NSMS alumni as part of our Alumni Spotlight series throughout 2020.
Which years were you at NSMS?
I was a student at NSMS from 2015-2018.
Who was your teacher?
Angela Triandafillou
What is a favorite NSMS memory?
My favorite NSMS memory would be composing and performing my first piano piece for the NSMS Composition Contest. This was my first exposure to creating, notating, and refining a musical idea that was an original and performance ready. This first piece inspired me to continue exploring music composition.
What are you doing now?
I am currently a sophomore at Carnegie Mellon University majoring music composition and humanities analytics, and minoring in sound design and animation. I have composed and premiered over 15 compositions. I love exploring experimental, contemporary, world, jazz, and film musical genres that bridge science and technology with artistic expression to create multi-sensory experiences. Here is a link to a recent performance of one of my compositions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdDBW5pdAZk&feature=youtu.be&t=3550
What role does your education at NSMS play in your life today?
My education at NSMS plays a large role in my life today. As a music composition major at Carnegie Mellon University my experience and education in piano has helped me continue to perform as a pianist with my peers as well as provide a strong foundation to my composition process.
Thanks for this update, Shambhavi! We can't wait to hear your next composition.
